Pete, is that a Leyland or Standard-Triumph publication? It's wrong,
whoever published it. The GD series is basically the 12/50 motor (48 or
51 hp.), which was installed in many (most? all?) Herald 1200s and
Sports 1200s (same car) destined for the US from sometime in 1964 on. GD is
also the Commission number for the 12/50 series.
This might help clarify (from VTR's WWW pages, Herald section):

Numbering of Major Components

For the most part, engines, gearboxes and rear axle units are
numbered similarly to the cars, although there are some exceptions.
[NOTE: as with other Triumph engine units, the HE suffix denotes a
high compression engine, and LE denotes a low compression engine.]
[....]

Herald 1200; Sports 1200 The GA prefix is most
commonly found on engine, gearbox and rear axle (4.11:1). Prefix
letters GD may also be found on engines; this denotes either the 48
hp. or 51 hp. version of the "12/50" engine.

Herald 13/60 (not officially imported to the U.S.)
The GE prefix is most often found on engine and rear axle; GA prefix
continues on gearbox....
I'm pretty sure that whatever source you're looking at should read
February 1963, not 1968.

Sorry to nitpick (honest, Pete, it's nothing personal), but I don't like to
see an error perpetuated because of a typo in one published work. All
sources I've seen, including a 1964 Sports 1200 I owned way back when
(with an original GD series engine), confirm the 1963 start date for the
GD series engines.
