I've recently gone though this same exercise, only for autocrossing use. I
have TR6 wheels on my TR4 (15 X 5 1/2), with 205.65.15 tires. I'm getting a
little rubbing on the outside of the tread during HARD cornering, but then
the car has been lowered 2 inches.
I've been told by people who race TR4s that you can get 215.60.15s under one
that's not lowered so much, but I can't verify that from personal experience.
Also, many use the Panasport and Minilite wheels, which are 6" wide, with no
problem.
I went with the 205.65.15s because I'm just starting to autocross and I
figure to wear them our quickly, and they were cheap for a high performance
tire. The next set will be 205.60.15, and that's probably what I'd recommend
as the biggest "reasonable" tire for a TR4, especially if it's lowered at
all.
Good luck
