John,
Smear some thick grease on the gasket and push it into the groove with
a small screwdriver. It works every time for me!
Regards,
Chad

This may instantly label me as a Triumph rookie, but is there a good way to
keep the @#$%^%^& outer oil filter gasket in place while you tighten down the
filter?
girlfriend "What's the cat litter for, we don't have a cat?"
me: "No, but I just changed the oil on my Triumph."
girlfriend: "Huh?"
