it's been some time since i did this on an alternator car- your manual
probably tells you specs, but for most 12 volt alternator cars, volts
(across battery cable connections) should be at least 14 at roughly 1000
rpm with headlights and heater fan running and should be at least 18 with
regulator bypassed with a jumper- don't bypass regulator on a generator
equipped car for any more than a brief moment if at all, you'll be
rebuilding or replacing it- anyway, if your ammeter is + with heater fan
and headlights running, and it starts/ doesn't die with headlights on,
you're probably ok, aren't you?
