Gary The Stock Ford distributor has no retard movement as you describe. I'm not familiar with the internals of the Mallory but I would investigate that first. You should try to find an exploded view of your distributor with a description of each part. 10 degrees retard at the rotor should be 20 degrees retard at the crank. And to confirm, from it's resting place, the rotor can also be rotated 10 degrees in the opposite direction (clockwise - to the right) which I referred to as "retard". Mechanic buddy had the exact same reaction as you, that it does not make sense to mfr it with opposite movement.
