I don't usually hype my company's products here, but the GE H6024NH
Nighthawk Automotive Sealed Beams (Product Code 28153) are a great
drop-in replacement for your tired and dim headlamps. The Nighthawk
brand are 30% brighter than standard Halogen lamps, and 100% brighter
than the old incandescent lamps. The low beam only draws 35 watts, so it
doesn't tax your generator, but puts out as much light as a H4 55 watt.
I use them on both my Tigers and run the low beams all the time as DLRs.
These lamps are available at auto parts stores or on Amazon.
As for those of you that run Cibie or Hella replaceable lamps, there is
a reason those have NEVER been approved for usage by the DOT. Those type
of headlamp systems are not hermetically sealed, so moisture and oxygen
are constantly being pumped in and out with every light-up/cool-down
cycle. This causes serious deterioration of the reflective surface,
usually a 30% to 40% loss of light output by the time you replace the
original H4. All replaceable inner lamp headlights used in this country
must use either gasket-sealed lamps like 9004/5/6/7 or have an air-tight
seal around the lamp/reflector interface. That's why high output sealed
beams are a better option for older cars only driven occasionally, as
the reflector deterioration is time-driven and goes on even when our toy
cars sleep. Sealed beams are just that: the Halogen capsule is
hermetically sealed inside the Parabolic Aluminized Reflector (hence the
term PAR, as in PAR64, PAR38, PAR20 etc) and so you get a nice bright
lamp every time you put in a replacement.
A note of warning here, the good ol' sealed beam lamp is rapidly going
the way of the dinosaur, my company has the only plant left in this
hemisphere that can make them, and we make them for a lot of folks
besides us. Consider laying in a set for the future if you plan to keep
your vintage car for the next decade.

Tigers,
I was reading an article in Hemmings Muscle Machines re replacing
incandescent headlamps with halogens.
The article also talks about utilizing a wiring harness from Painless
Wiring. Has anyone out there made this type of switch.
Maybe it's me getting older, but I would love to have brighter headlamps
on my Tiger.
