Thanks for the help on this one. I called the tranny shop and they said they
found some kind of wire clip in the solvent tank so I will stop by and hope
that it is what came off my transmission. The PO put in a HiPo 289 and a 6
bolt bell housing and I saw that Ford changed the lever design on the Mustang
a dozen times it seems so I really hope they didn't lose this part as I'm not
100% positive which lever design I have.

You'll find a partially punched stub in the pivot riveted to the inside of the
bellhousing. A short curved spring wire fits between the two holes in the
fork. The arch of this spring wire slips under the notch formed by the
partially punched stub. That's what holds the fork on the pivot. The process
of latching this curve of the spring under the notch is a very tricky, blind
process which requires a lot of patience. A dab of heavy grease on the edge
of the top of the pivot lubricates this assembly. The transmission shop owes
you this small spring wire. It's available in the aftermarket, but it's not
common.
Worse yet, if you are in the process of changing from a 5 bolt to a 6 bolt
bellhousing, your old 5 bolt fork is WRONG for this 6 bolt application as they
have different dimensions which affect your throwout bearing and clutch
operation. If the pivot in the 6 bolt bellhousing has a rectangular hole
instead of the punched stub, it is a later design version and requires a fork
with a spring clip riveted to it that clamps into this rectangular hole. If
you can't tell the difference, send me some pics. Ain't this fun.
