Jim:

My car is a Mk1A and, therefore, has the lenses that unscrew from the outside.  
However, over the years I have owned several Mk1's like yours and, if memory 
serves me correctly, I do believe that the bulb sockets just pull out of the 
housing with no twisting required.  They have little "tangs" on them that hold 
them tightly in place inside the taillight housing; they're tight in the 
housing since that is how the bulb socket is grounded.  If they haven't been 
out in a while, they might feel a bit stubborn, but some gentle persuasion from 
you will get them out without having to remove the wiring or the taillight 
housing.
