I spoke to a guy who has done State safety inspections in Vermont for
years. He said that the Federal requirements for the color of lens changed a
few times over the years as additional lights were added......directional
signals, side marker lights, back-up lights, etc..
He said technically, for a car to pass the present State safety
inspection, lights are supposed to meet the standards that were in effect when
the
car was built. All original lights have to work and if the owner has added
any lights they also have to work.
If the owner installed lights don't work and the owner doesn't want to
repair them, he can remove them.
You don't have to add lights that were never original to the manufactured
car......for example a Tiger wouldn't need back-up lights even though they
are required on modern cars.
And you can't change the color of the original lens. (Of course how many
inspectors would know the original color;-)
