The usual requirements for SUNI venues include (not in order of
importance):
- Space for several hundred people and 100+ cars, including trailer
storage
- Nearby location that is suitable for autocross
- Interesting scenery
- Decently drivable from any location in the US (despite the fact that
it's called "international", the vast majority of the attendees that
bring cars are from the US).
- Reasonable hotel rates
As it happens, wintertime resorts generally hit several of the above
requirements, and that puts most potential locations in the northern US.
The other thing is that the current Tiger ownership appears to be
concentrated towards the left and right coastlines in North America.
Pulling SUNI too far in one direction or the other will make the drive
pretty long for people that are in the other direction. Some people have
done 2500 mile one-way drives from Florida to attend each of the last
two SUNIs...
I'm not complaining. Suni 3 was about a nine hour drive for us, and Suni
4 about thirteen IIRC... Rapid City will be about 15, two days' driving
if all goes according to plan. See you all there, and I hope that the
location pulls more of the east-coast people in.
