dear all,
many thanks to those who commented and offered advice on my bearing
and hub issues.
the hub turned out to fit on the shaft nicely after i cleaned up the
surfaces on the hub, the washer and the key so i pulled the shaft and
changed the bearing. with the shaft being so long i wasn't able to
rig up any way to press the bearing on hydraulically but i put the
bearing in boiling water and using the dismantled old bearing and some
pipe i could tap it on quite easily. the cup also tapped into the
axle housing fairly easily after leaving it in the freezer for a
while.
now the wheel is tight and doesn't make the nasty noise it did before.
