I would be afraid of moisture from the inside fender area and inside the
rocker panel. Any metal heated to weld temperature needs to be treated with
chemicals to be cleaned up and then painted to keep it from rusting and it
would be next to impossible to get to it.  I think that is why many people
like to fill the whole area smoothly because to repair that area with an
open seam where the quarter corner fits over the rocker panel is impossible
without welding and then not being able to seal it completely. If one wanted
it to look original, just file a groove in the putty before painting.  That
would be a chore to get it to look good but it depends on what you want.
Mike there are no silly questions because there are a variety of people that
have a variety of abilities and that's what makes the list work. Something

OK,

hope this is not a silly question... Why not weld the seams? Will it distort
the sills? Surely it would help stiffen the car and it is unlikely to let
water in.. or drop out. has anyone done this.. ?
