Ever notice the similarity between the original Ford Thunderbird and
Alpines? Same peaked fender line, hooded headlights, tail fins, &
grill opening. Before joining Rootes in 1956 as chief designer of the
Alpine, Kenneth Howes was in charge of the Ford design studio in
Detroit. Coincidence? I don't think so.
In a departure from production standards, the original headlight rims
on the Le Mans mule were stainless steel and were round. And yes, the
peak of the fender line extended above them. I thought they looked
pretty mean, and had quite a time finding some nice replacements.
Today the car sports some chromed MK II's....?????
