Tom Hall (ModTiger Engineering) makes the T5 conversion kit using a
custom rear housing, which properly positions the shifter and has the
correct speedo drive. All the other T5 conversions are based on nearly
unobtainable AMC or S-10 rear housings that also have some problems left
up to the user to resolve.
For the top loader:
If you're staying with the 2.88 rear end then having a shorter first
gear (2.78) and wider ratios makes sense. However, if you have a zoomy
engine and 3:31 or higher diff ratio then the 2.32 first gear is the way
to go, because otherwise you'll end up shifting out of first before you
cross an intersection.
If you do go with the 5 speed conversion then the same thing applies -
get the narrowest (lowest numerical) ratio you can for first gear,
especially if you have a shorter final drive ratio.
Best regards,
Theo
