Ford never called the Ford GT a "GT 40" - it was always referred to as
the Ford GT - both the 1960's original and the current (soon to be
discontinued) variant were both labeled and referred to as the "Ford GT".
If memory serves, in the 1960s when Ford was racing in Europe, someone
in England noticed that the car was 40 inches tall and called if the
"Ford GT 40" to distinguish it from other Ford cars that had "GT"
variants, such as the Cortina.
I have a copy of "Ford: The dust and the Glory - A Racing History" by
Leo Levine, who personally ran the GT program for Ford - and the book
refers to the car as the "Ford GT" or simply the "GT" after the "Lola
GT" on which the "Ford GT" was based.
