It sounds like the transmission gears are not messing or you have a
short speedometer inner cable.(?)
1 Push the inner square cable in as far as it will go into the
speedometer cable to make sure it has engaged the 15 tooth gear.
Turn the square cable by hand
If you can turn the square cable easily more than 1 turn with no
resistance then the gears are not messed or the 15 tooth gear is
broken.
2 Check to make sure the speedometer cable is seated all the way at
the transmission; if it is seated correctly then you need to remove
the speedometer cable from the transmission and check the condition of the
15 tooth gear.
3 With the speedometer cable out check to see that it engages the 15
tooth gear and that you can turn it by hand and the gear and cable
turn easily.
If the inner square cable is too short it will not engage both the
transmission gears and the speedometer correctly.
There have been some short cables on the market. Check to make sure it is
exactly the same as the one you took out and make sure both ends of the
inner cable are the same as the original cable.
If the inner square cable is not the same length as the original, you might
be able to swap in the original inner cable as long as it is not frayed or
damaged in any way.
If the inner square cable is broken or the square ends are bad it will not
work.
If the speedometer cable is not seated correctly at the transmission and the
speedometer, the speedometer will not work.
If the 15 tooth gear is worn or broken it need to be replaced.
You need to step through this and inspect each part until you locate the
problem. Do the easy checks first before you start pulling the
transmission.
The drive gear inside the transmission usually does not fail, but they are
available as is a 16 tooth driven gear for the speedometer cable.
A 16 tooth gear cost $10 - $15
The transmission drive gear is Ford part # B7C-17285-A; my sources indicate
this is a 6 tooth gear, cost about $20
The drive gear is on the tail shaft so it might be possible to replace this
in the car by just removing the tail shaft housing.(?) I have never done
this so I do not know for sure.
Hope this helps

Subject: Speedo BAD problems.......:-(
well a little bit ago, i asked how i could fix my speedometer. It didnt work
at all, some sugested that it was too cold and the oil inside was too thick.
Well thats not it. I took the cable out of the tranny, and turned the gear
with my hand. And the speedo moved up and down. Well i thought thats what it
should be doing. So i put it back in. but before i put it back in, i looke
inside that hole to see if the other gear was in there. YEa i could see it.
So i put it all back together. And went for a ride. Well the speedo didnt
work at all. So when we stopped to get gas, i took the end off from the
guage. Then we were on our way. After we were moving about 40. (2grand in
4th gear) I reached down to see if the cable was turning. Well it wasnt. And
so we got on the interstate and were goin about 80 and then it still wasnt.
Right now, i have the original 15th tooth gear and its in good cond. And its
a new cable.
So whats my problem?? Im guessing i need to take the tranny out and do
somethign to the other gear inside.
any suggestions would be apreciated. Should i get a 16 tooth and see what
happens? How much are they?
