I am impressed with your results. From info on this list, I have not
been alarmed by the temp on my bored and stroked (331) motor. It runs
around 200-210, occasionally going to 220. I have a 180 thermostat with
a by-pass hole in it. I lose coolant at a relatively slow rate, (out the
overflow tube, 13# rad cap) but I am using oil at the same rate as you
were, roughly a U.S. quart every 300 miles. This does alarm me.
I have an infrared thermometer. My gauge was reading approx 20 deg.
high, temp measured at the base of the temp sender unit. (That was
really scary!) So I took the gauge apart and bent the needle to read the
same as the infrared thermometer. Now I get the readings mentioned above
on my in-dash original gauge.
I wonder has anyone else on this list seen a reduction in oil
consumption with a reduction in coolant temp as described by Paul?
Perhaps I need to fit a new rad. I'd like cool legs, better oil
consumption and no coolant leakage too!

Problem solved. I checked the voltage stabilizer and it checked out as
working fine. I did buy a solid state one on E-Bay that I will install
in the spring after I refinish and while I'm installing the wood dash.
That led me to believe the gauge was at least close to correct as
everything was very very hot. I couldn't see while installed on the
engine but the water pump had been leaking very slowly from the weep
hole, also a local speed shop told me the pump was made in 1963. I
replaced it with a rebuilt one that came with the car. It has the
correct size fan flange. Engine had a 13" 7 blade stainless flex fan
that wouldn't fit the correct pump so I picked up a 14" 6 blade
Flexalite fiberglass fan with a serious pitch. I did have to drill out
the center hole so it would fit. The last thing was the radiator. I
went to the local shop and had my radiator re-cored. The Tiger had 4
rows, each 3/8", and a 14 fin/in count. I had it re-cored with a 3 row,
each 5/8" dimpled and a 16 fin/in count that the shop brought in from
Maine Radiator. That gives me at least the cooling of a 5 row. I then
put in a Flexalite pusher fan with thermostat. I think it pushes about
1200 cfm. I haven't set it up to work on auto yet but I haven't needed
it yet. My gauge now reads no higher than 190 with a 180 thermostat.
When I install the solid state voltage regulator the gauge should be
more accurate. The old radiator was not in great shape, was about 20%
plugged that I could see. What I couldn't see could have been much
worse. The radiator cost me $500. but it looks absolutely stock and the
stock shroud fits no problem.
My legs are no longer burning. Everything is cooler. Oil no longer
sprays on the underside of the hood from the dipstick. Car uses almost
no oil, before it would use a quart every couple hundred miles.
