Some guy probably threw his back out carrying a full case and sued everyone
involved. Thus, it was reactionary business following routine.  Or it is a
marketing appeal to to woman (since so many men sent their wive's to the
store for them) who are used to purchasing milk, juice ans fabric softener
in similar sized packaging.
   I could never figure out the gallon containers (why not 5 qt's???) until
my brother gave me a Mazda 323 (a generous act on his part after I
incessently complained about the price of gas). That thing takes all of
3-1/3 qt's and the filter is about the size of a bathroom Dixie cup.
