Curtis,
All the other guages are working just perfect. Does a guage regulator do
something to the Tach? Well before, i had the original tach in, and it was
bouncing all around all the time. No matter if the gen was charging any. But i
had
an extra 8cylindar one downstairs, i dont know from where, but it was a
Jaeger just like the rest. (Besides the ammeter, mine is a Lucas. Is that
Right?)
So i put in the tach from downstairs and it was working great, and now it
just started bouncing around recently. So, should i have them both rebuilt? Or
is it something else that is making the tach do this.
I have practically new ignition system. New coil, wires, points, condeser,
cap, spark plugs, and rotor. I think thats it. So it cant really be any of
those??
Maybe Theo can hit me off the list and let me know how much he charges for
the rebuild.
thanks alot.
Joey

You can also run the motor for a very short time with the fan belt OFF.
If there is no problem with tach, Ron has the right idea of having the
generator or regulator rebuilt/replaced.
The tachometer has old (really old) electronic parts in it that are weak
and subject to aging (capacitors and geranium transistors) and they get
just plain flaky with age. Tom Hall and Theo have a rebuild program
to fix this.
Also, what are the other guages doing? Is the fuel guage and water temp
reasonably steady? There is a voltage regulator that is flaky also, and it
could
influence your tach.
When my tach died, I bought an Autometer solid state modern tach.
Worked well and was painless to install. I used the Tiger bezel (chrome
ring) and
it looked pretty good. (about $39) later, I had the original tach rebuilt
but have
not installed it.
Good luck Joey, we like to hear how you have gotten your car back on the
road,
Curtis
