Last summer I bought a new water pump from Rick for my Mk1A.  I, too, had the 
stock pulley interference problem, but two minutes with a grinder fixed it.  
Inspection confirmed that shape of the pump body casting had changed since the 
previous pump.  There was no problem with the position of the hub, etc.

So grind the offending bit away, and you should be in good shape.
