Bob and Tom:
First off, how does one hot wire the ignition switch? Is there any
definitive test to do to the switch to see if it's gone bad (maybe this
is it).
As to the carb., I've got the float levels set just slightly above the
bottom of the see through bowl sight glasses. Good point about seeing if
there's fuel in the bowls when it stalls. I have not looked at that when
it happens. I'll be driving again tommorow so I'll look for that. I
always thought the car was most suseptable to this on hot days, but
today was mild, and with my new radiator, water temps never got much
over 170 so heat probably wasn't the issue today. I think I'll order a
new ignition switch tommorow and install it, just to be safe, as I
understand they do go wrong fairly regularly.
The car does usually re-start with a little goosing of the gas pedal
after one of these incidents. The carb is a Holley 4 bbl with vacuum
secondaries. I do use an aftermarket Purolator fuel pump (the little
"cube" shaped job). I wonder if they ever start to work intermittently?
Now that I think of it though, if the carb ran out of fuel, it would
probably kind of spuuter off, rather than just suddenly shut down,
wouldn't it?
In very hot weather (not today) I do get fuel percolation which you can
see in my plastic fuel filter in the engine compartment. This so far
hasn't seemed to cause a problem and again, with today's mild weather, I
don't think it happened anyway.
Thanks for the advice so far!
