I can't claim to know the answer for sure, but I'd believe the windage
tray saves considerable energy by reducing the work of the crank and
lower connecting rods accelarating all that oil slosh around (think
about the drag of one tire hitting a water puiddle at speed). And if
you think friction drag through air is bad, imagine what it is like
through a dense cloud of oil, or worse yet standing oil. This is a big
part of why is important not to overfill your oil. The hydraulic loads
against the crank would be HUGE.
