Dave,
The thicker part is towards the back. They are used to create (positive)
caster in the front end. Installing them backwards would likely give you a
very unstable car! Sometimes people will add a shim on the rear as well to
increase caster. From my experience it becomes difficult to get the bolts to
tighten flush to the crossmember and leaves a bit of a gap (between the
crossmember and frame rail) in the front. The maximum recommondation I have
heard is 1/4", but I think I ground mine (with a slight angle) to an average
of 3/16" (and still had the situation mentioned above). Regardless, I left
them in (after all the time spent).
