Yesterday I received a private email from a party that I think would prefer
to stay anonymous, and for that sake will not say who it was. No it wasn't
Norm, but this party has spoken in a knowing manner on the list before. They
strongly "hinted" that there might be at least two types of rivets used on at
least early Tigers.
This morning I dug out TBON and looked for rivet pictures. On the top of
page 49 there is a VIN plate B9470072 that shows what I believe are typically
called Rootes rivets. They appear to be so because of the very small hole,
especially showing in the upper left rivet. However, on page 23 the rivets of
VIN plate B9470018 appears to have a larger hole and more of a rounded, rather
than tapered head, especially the low right rivet as well the only showing
rivet on the spec plate. To furture confound me on page 11 the VIN plate
B38200008 shows again the the rivet with the larger hole and the picture
stated ".... undisturbed ID elements."
As best I can tell from the black and white pictures in TBON:
1. B9470018, B9470101(my Tiger), and B38200008 all appear to have the same
rivets, but these do not appear to be the typical very small holed, tapered
rivets commonly associated with being Tiger VIN rivets. It would also seem out
of order that B38200008 has these same rivets that are (hinted) to being
attributed to early B947 #'s since Norm states they are "undisturbed."
2. B9470072 appears to have the typical small holed Rootes rivet yet is is an
early B947# Tiger.
Please, I'm not trying to call anyone wrong (or right). I'm just trying to
figure out what is the correct rivet for my car and determine if I have them.
Unfortunately for me I was supposed to have been TACed on wheels a few years
ago, but they ran out of time before they could get to my home.

Ok ont he Alpine 260! Bummer, I thought I had a rare one.... When I did take
the Alpine Vin plate off it did have some peaky little pop rivets, but they
were not like the ones on the tiger. I will take a pix for reference...I
need to take some more of the race car to show the gray primer I have put on
it. One more coat and a light sanding and the first color coat goes
on...Russo (or Rosso) Red, a Ford color, natch...

I just went to the garage and looked at B9470099. She has JAL plate with
the
correct(?) flat headed, slotted screws. Both the stamped nr plate, and the
spec plate have the same, very small rivets with small holes in the center
which do not go all the way through.
Also the spec plate say's Alpine 260 on the bottom line.
