Frank:

We have just pulled the engine from my Mk2 and had to remove the radiator, 
fan blade and pulley, expansion tank, alternator and brackets, the passenger 
side header and both motor mount brackets.  Then it dropped right out the 
bottom. We did have to pull it all the way forward to clear the rear 
transmission mount.

It was amazingly painless under Nick Kintner's tutelage.
