White LEDs are becoming more affordable all the time and are also being made available in automotive type bases. You can get wedge-base LEDs (like type 194 bulbs) for about $4. They should have LONG life, without growing dimmer over time, as well as less power dissipation than incandescent bulbs. Next time I order parts from Digi-Key I'll get them to throw some of those in.
