How about finding a used steering rod in a junk yard with a 5/8 -18 thread 
that you could cut off?

I don't know where you live but there must be a machine equipment/repair 
place or farm sales place near you that has long 5/8 grade 5 or 8 bolts and 
nuts.

They may ship you what you want.
