Hi Jim,

Yes, you should have a three position switch and one position on the switch 
should be open or off. When you turn the switch on to position # 2 (Brown, 
Lt. Green) or
 # 3 (Red, Lt. Green) it completes the circuit to the ground wire (Black) for 
the two speeds.
