Just adding to Erich's good advice, the reason 351W heads use longer
pushrods is they use valves with longer stems. If you use the longer valves,
plus the springs, etc. that are compatible, then you will obviously need the
longer pushrods (nominally 351W). It is worth getting Comp Cams, or Manley
(my favorite) pushrods just because they are hardened and a lot more rugged
than the stock pushrods. If you are using guideplates, hardened pushrods are
a must. You may well find that the Manley checking pushrod will indicate the
same length as either the stock 351W or stock 289 pushrods, but don't be
tempted to use them for the reasons given.
