gas tank cleaning

Hello all,
    It's finally time for me to clean out my gas tanks.  I'm tired of
cleaning the pine needles & paint chips out of my tank.  I planned on just
pulling the tanks out and taking them to my favorite radiator shop.  Is
there a better alternative?
