Larry, Dave,
I am sure that Doane pulled every trick he thought he could get away with. I
just happen to think that running 289 cu. in. wasn't one of them; it's too
easy to check. He was probably running every bit of overbore they allowed
though, at least 0.040" and maybe even 0.060", but that wasn't a problem
since if he was using a sleeved 289 block. As to the potential of a well
massaged 260, I have had the pleasure of riding in a Tiger with a Wally
Cartwright built 260. This Tiger was owned by Mike Rosato at the time, an ex
SCCA racer, prepared by Dick Guldstrand, and it's handling and power were
pretty amazing. Mike had taken off the SCCA mandated two-barrel and
installed a set of Webers, so you need to factor that into the equation.
Mike regularly ran that engine in the 8,000 rpm range. I remember one time
we were going down the straight at Willow and we had reached the rev limit,
which was set at 8,500 and we were being overtaken by another car. Mike
reached out and dialed the rev limit to over 9,000 and we weren't passed. On
numerous other occasions, Mike ran that 260 at over 9,000 rpm and, to my
knowledge, it never broke. I don't know exactly how much power it was
putting out, but relative to other engines I know were over 300 HP, 349 HP
wouldn't surprise me. Also, I know that Dave Drahle builds 302's with cast
iron 351W heads that put out over 400 HP. Let's do the math, if a 260 puts
out 349 HP, then assuming linear relationship with displacement gives 405 HP
from a 302. I reality, you should be able to get a little more HP per cu.
in. with lower displacement because of better breathing efficiency. For the
foregoing reasons, I continue to believe that number 55 really ran a 260 cu.
in. motor, that was probably a sleeved HiPo 289 block.

Dave, not hearing from Bob P, I tend to think you have a story that is
probably
true. Now a 289 ci would produce the 349 hp, if it was worked over, and
with a
high compression.
Nothing like cubes, and that is why the stroker engine, after the 5.0L is so
attractive. Of course more $$$$$, vs a 5.0L which is cheaper than a decent
engine
rebuild.
Ah, the never ending quest for more hp.
