You can buy a Ford canister filter that will fit directly in the hoses,
and is the same as original, at most parts suppliers, of either Ford or
major aftermarket supplier.
There may be some residual fuel in the filter, and lines above the
filter, which can drip out when the clamps are removed. Most will
generally drain back overnight, when everything in the engine
compartment cools off anyway, so there should not be a problem with fuel
leakage. Some handy rags around the clamp joints wouldn't hurt, but
there is no great risk here.
