Jay,
Last check, points were running $2.50-$3.50 per set, not including
condenser. Pertronix I (quite adequate) was running $67. I'd call that
about 10 sets. With any kind of hot coil, those points will need
replacing every 10,000 miles (today's quality) and adjustment and
cleaning every 3,000. Not to mention performance loss as the rubbing
block wears, and the points pit. Besides the dwell constantly changing
at the cost of performance.
The Pertronix 2 is an improved design, with a semiconductor current
limiter to allow hotter coils, bigger gaps, and better performance. The
cost is about $60 MORE. I am sure it is worthwhile improvement, but
requires the Hot Coil, (unpriced), and maybe a good capacitive discharge
high energy system, which uses so little current that the improved
capacity of the new unit is not very important. BUT, because the current
is lower, the Tach is going to need the "fix" of Tom Hall, outlined in
TigersUnited.com and STOA's site.
In any event, it is NOT a cure for a bad bearing in the distributor,
which must be rebuilt anyway. A wobbly magnet ring can cause uneven
timing between cylinders. It costs about $65 for a distributor rebuild,
which includes new vacuum canister, new shaft bearings, and a re-curve
of the spring/weights for better performance. Money well spent.
Hope that answers your question. An ignition module is not a cure for a
bad distributor.
