Steve is right. Problems with the distributor and primary (Low voltage) side of
the
ignition system will cause the miss fire and tach to bounce. Loose connections,
bad
ignition switch, bad points can all cause the problem. Of those items, the most
likely to
go bad is the Unilite unit. People have claimed that they fail often. I fixed a
stranded
289 Cobra this summer that had that problem. You can get a replacement module
from Jegs
for the Mallory; $90. It would be worth having a spare module at any rate, just
in case.
An alternative is a magnetic type of points system like MSD, Pertronix, even
Mallory
makes one.
