Steve, you will like the larger displacement, and especially the T-5,
with its 5th gear overdrive. 1st gear is lower than a top loader, 4th
is a 1:1, just like the top loader, but 5th allows you to cruise at low rpm.
With a stock 1990 Mustang, 1:7 roller rockers, Edelbrock F4B, Holley DP
600 cfm, 2.25" exhaust with crossover and Flowmaster 50 series, and MSD
my car dyno'ed at 237 hp at 5200 rpm, with a real flat torque curve
going from 250 at 1800 rpm's to 276 at 3500-4000 rpm, and 250 at 5000
rpm's. All figures at rear wheels.
Steve, just determine what you want in rear gearing, and then torque or
hp, as the car is so light, you will blow off the Mustangs, and give
most of the Porches guys a surprise.
