I'm afraid that if you have the original pop rivets, they
will have to removed. It is almost impossible to put
on a coat of paint that is thin enough to allow the
strips to engage again. SS has plastic replacements
that work well. Or you can use very small chrome
machine screws that will slide in the grooves of the
side strips. You can attach nuts and lock washers
from behind. You can do this for almost all the
rivets except the ones for the small strip on the front
fenders. You can't get behind to attach a nut. So
you have to use the plastic clips.
