Dead speedometer

I've been having too much fun driving the Tiger to notice, until
today, that the speedometer has gone kaput and doesn't register.  The
cable inner core spins nicely, and I think I've got the cable
properly aligned and connected to the speedometer.

Any suggestions on how to check the speedometer's operation on the
bench?
