Yes, I have committed a clerical error now and then (and quite a few more
if I were actually a member of the clergy). However, in this instance I
believe I have stated the mathematical relationship correctly. It is common
among my peers to use phrases such a "goes by" or "varies as", or "scales
as", as substitutes for "is proportional to". Of course, the volume
equation could also be written in terms of diameter instead of radius; e.g.,
Volume = (pi/4) X (Diameter^2) X Distance traveled
Which ever parameter you use, radius, diameter, or even circumference, is
simply a matter of convenience. The mathematics is there to serve us, not
visa versa. ;-)
