I agree with Harry. That sounds like the dreaded Shifter Wear Problem, that
I experienced a bunch of years back. I was "nose in" to a parking slot
facing slightly down hill, when it decided to stick in first. I was able to
"Flintstone" it out of the space with one leg, ( the other on the clutch)
(thank God I was doing a lot of bicycling at the time) , and drive home in
first.
The shifter can be replaced without removing the tranny. This may vary
between cars, but I was unable to get the removed shifter out of the tunnel
until I discovered the trick. After that, it was a breeze, and the new
shifter worked with much less slop.
Oh, you want to know the trick? What I had to do was disassemble the
shifter while it's still in the tunnel. The pieces come out easy.
I've wondered about drilling out passages in the shaft that runs through
the shifter and adding a grease fitting, to inject grease into the
internals. This ought to cut down on the wear..
