radar detectors

Hello fellow listers:
Has anyone come across a radar detector that doesn't sit up on the dash with 
wires hanging down? I was riding in a BMW of a friend of a friend and this 
car had a completely build in unit with only a small bullet shaped device 
mounted on the upper dash as the detector. It sounded for two bands and 
laser; and came on when the car key was turned on. All completely built in. 
Any ideas as to what make this was?  Would being built in affect it's 
ability to alert?
