Chris,
I pulled the engine out of my Tiger twice in the first six months of
ownership.
Pull it out the bottom, let gravity do some of the work.
Tools needed:
Two Jack stands.
Two auto ramps.
One floor jack.
One cherry picker.
Decent tool box.
Piece of chain.
Procedure:
Start on a level surface.
Jack up the back of the car and put the rear wheels on the ramps, (approx.
8" high) or other suitable and safe platforms.
Jack up the front of the car until the bottom of the valance is about 27
inches off of the ground. Secure with jack stands under the frame, aft of
the crossmember. Remember to place the stands so they wont impede the
locating of the picker under the car.
Remove the hood.
Spray some penetrating oil into the tops of the crossmember mounting bolt
holes.
Also spray some on the splines of the lower steering u-joint and motor
mount bolts while you're at it.
Take off the shift boot and remove the shifter handle from the linkage.
Disconnect the speedo cable.
Pull the drive shaft. mark it.
Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder and bracket from the bell housing.
Disconnect headers or header pipes from the exhaust, you may have to take
the rest of the exhaust system mounting bolts loose so you can slide the
entire system back in the car if you dont feel like cutting them off.
Pull the radiator.
Diconnect the wiring harness, take some pictures before you do this.
Disconnect the throttle linkage.
Disconnect heater hoses if you have any.
Disconnect fuel lines and plug them.
Remove the carb, cover the hole.
Remove the alternator or generator and its bracket.
Remove stock oil filter bracket from left side head.
Undo the lower u-joint clamp on the steering shaft, mark it.
Undo the left front hard brake line from the five way fitting on the inside
fender well.
Remove the right front hard brake line from the bracket on the right side
of the crossmember.
Cut a piece of 3/4" plywood that will cover the 4 lower fulcrum pin clamps
on the bottom of the crossmember.
Locate that plywood on your floor jack lifting pad and jack the board up
under the crossmember so that it supports the front crossmember using only
the four fulcrum pin clamps as contact points. The fore and aft balance
point is in the open space where the oil pan resides. If your tires are off,
the balance point may be different.
Undo the four crossmember mounting bolts. Balance is crucial here. Make
sure you are supporting the crossmember with the jack, but dont lift the
car.
Lower the crossmember onto the floor and drag it out.
Roll the cherry picker beam over the front of the car. using a piece of 3/8
chain, attach the engine to the picker via the chain using the bolt holes
in the front of both heads. Make sure the chain is long enought so you can
drop the engine all the way out the bottom without the picker beam hitting
the top of the radiator support.
Take up on the picker, dont lift the car.
Put the floor jack under the transmission and remove the rear trans mount.
Remove the 6 motor mount bolts in the sides of the frame rails.
Now you have the front of the engine hanging on the picker and the trans
supported by the floor jack.
If you have headers you will have to pick the engine up slightly and shove
it back until the #1 and #5 tubes will clear the pinched portion of the
frame. You wont have to go back too far, watch your firewall, and gas line.
Remember the trans on the floor jack, the shift linkage will be close to
jamming in the tunnel so watch out.
With the headers clear, drop the engine to the floor and drag it forward as
you drop it.
Drag it far enough so you can get the trans output shaft clear of the X in
the frame.
Drop the floor jack. now your engine and trans are sitting on the garage
floor under the car.
Drag it out the front, if you can get help.
If your doing this alone, E-mail me for free plans for a low-profile
engine/trans cart that will allow you to roll the engine and attached trans
out from under the car.
Put the crossmember back on, Remember no brakes!
Questions?, comments?, suggestions?, Snide remarks?
If you think this sounds like a pain in the ass, Try pulling it out the
top.
