The 1999 California Melee is almost upon us! Yes, it's that
time again, time for a grueling 500+ mile rallye thru Northern
california's best back roads. The Rally leaves San Francisco on
Saturday morning, 9/11, following a top secret route up to Mendocino &
Ft. Bragg where we we spend the evening and then retunr the following
sunday to S.F. It's not a race or a passing contest, just the
opportunity to go on a beatiful drive with other like-minded
individuals who enjoy driving their old classic cars as much as
looking at them. Keep in mind that the condition of the car is not
important, as long as it is safe and roadworthy (I'm working on
getting my tiger safe & roadworthy right now!). There is no Snobbery
on the Melee. This is not the famous "California Mille" which Martin
Swig organizes. This ain't no wine & chees tour where Jeeves follows
behind in the Hummer ready to fix your type 35 Bugatti if it starts
that annoying rattle again!
The price for all this fun is just $150, that includes lodging
and dinner at the "gala awards banquet" for both driver & co-pilot.
Fun doesn't get much cheaper than this. The only requirement is that
your car be made before 1975. In the past, we've had a wide range of
cars, from a Aston Martin DB5 to a 1932 ford coupe (flat head V8) to a
Karmann Ghia to a '67 Iso Rivolta to a Lotus 7 to a 62 Buick Wildcat.
If interested, contact Harley Welch @ Magri motorcycles, 415-285-6735.
After 8/31, the entrance fee goes up to $190 for two. I have been on
every car & motorcycle rally that Harley has put together since 1994,
and each one has been a blast!
