Mike & All,
I will try to recount the story that was put on the RX7 mail list about
4 or so years ago. It was supposedly from Caterpillar and they wanted
to use K&N filters on their tractors because of the expense of replacing
the paper filters. I don't remember the exact application but they
they were clogging the paper filters every 24 hours of operation. I think
it was some sort of mining equipment. The story goes on to say that as
an experiment they used a big K&N, stock replacement. To check the
filtration they put a small 2" small diameter paper filter inside of the
big K&N. The experiment was supposed to go for 24 hours of operating
time for each vehicle and compare the K&N to the old paper filters.
They never made it. The small paper filters inside the K&N would
clog in 15 - 20 minutes. After several tries they discontinued the test.
I've used K&Ns on many 2 stroke motorcycles with good results. I'm
not against K&N but the above story gave me enough doubt to choose
paper. I'll check the RX7 list archive and see if I can find the post.
