After a weekend outing with fellow listers Bob Palmer, Allan Connell and
Colin Mills, I determined that my cooling system isn't as efficient as it
should be. Running uphill in 85 degree temperature my car was running close
to 220 while the other two cars were running at 200 degrees. I now plan on
replacing my old flex fan with "The Fan from Hell" as described in The Book
of Norman. I already have the fan, so locating one is a non-issue. What is
an issue is when I measure the available space between my radiator and fan
mounting flange I dont have sufficient space to mount the new fan. I only
need about 1/4" more space. If possible could you guys on the list supply
me with some measurements and info from your cars.
I presently run an original shroud over a 4 row core radiator. I have a
Motorsports 302 with aluminum GT-40 heads It has the old 260 front cover
mounted to it. I run a open back, passenger side inlet pump from a '64 260
Fairlane. I still run the origial Tiger pump pulley, but I cant press the
flange any closer to the pump housing without the back of the pulley
striking the inlet tube on the water pump. The core in my radiator may be
too deep to support this mod with a stock dimension water pump. The Temp
gauge is a new VDO with a matching sensor. The timing is OK.
Questions:
What is the distance in inches between the mounting surface on the back of
the water pump housing and the fan pulley mounting surface?
What is the distance in inches from the back side of the forward bulkhead
to the back side of the radiator? How far into the engine compartment does
the radiator protrude?
Has anyone gone to a shorter pump shaft and a shorter pulley? If so, what
type?
How close should the leading edge of the fan blades be to back of the
radiator.
Any after-market pumps out there with shorter shafts?
Any Ford pumps out there that run a shorter shaft?
Some of you may think that 220 isn't a problem. Some may say if it isn't
spewing water its not overheating. I guess I just want to be as cool as Bob
and Allan......If thats possible?
