Virtually all US and British cars were "positive-earth" until the 1950's. US car makers changed over first, then the British. The last positive-earth cars were probably marketed in the US in '66 or '67. Lucas made a full range of positive-earth equipment including a positive-earth version of the 10AC alternator. I believe a negative-earth system is slightly more efficient though I believe it is slightly more prone to the loss of ground through corrosion.
