I'm sure that cleaning up the shaft would have to do some good.  As far as
oiling the bearings or bushings - I'm not so sure.  We had quite a long
discussion on this topic a few months back.  A few of us had found that if the
oilite bearings are dry, it's near impossible to lubricate then with anything
that will last. I'm assuming that these are just pieces of brass rather than
ball or roller bearings (Ihaven't had mine apart to see).
  So, I'm still interested has anyone come up with a drop in replacement????
