Final Results, Palm Springs Vintage Car Race:
The sometimes Annual Palm Springs Vintage Auto Races came to
it's thrilling conclusion this
Sunday. The weather was clear and mild, as opposed to the
previous days dry out from
overnight showers on Friday. Many contenders were side
lined due to minor disagreements with course markers during
the elimination heats on Saturday.
After the preliminary eliminations were concluded, the field
was set for Sunday's final
competition. It had been narrowed to only the fastest, and
most durable drivers and cars.
It was a thrilling sight to see these marvelous historic
marques once again answer the call. The
majority of the driver's were as vintage as the cars they
drove.
Showing competitive driving skills during the earlier
production car runs, Steve Laifman, of
West Hills, California, came as a surprise winner, finishing
ahead of all contenders in the
Production Automobile category in his '65 Sunbeam Tiger
MkI. Not only was this car driven
competitively for the first time. but Mr. Laifman, while
remembered as a strong novice
competitor in the late 50's -early 60's, has not been in
active competition since.
The final drama was the closing race, due to complete as the
sun set early behind the mountains
at about 3:45 in the afternoon. All Group A cars still
running, and the first three placers in each
of the prior heats were competing.
As the sun set behind the western mountain range, the long
shadows across the track revealed
that Mr. Laifman, and his strong running Tiger, had finished
well ahead of any competition on
the track.
Well Done, Sir. A first in class, a first overall, and the
competition was not even in sight as
Mr. Laifman received the checkered flag.
Looking forward to next years events.
