As many of you know, a recent thread on this list addressed the questionable
provenence of a Tiger auctioned at this year's Monterey Hysterics. As I
remember, the car in question was a "MkII" which sold for around $30,000.
On my way to yet another airplane ride, I picked up the December issue of
Automobile magazine (don't usually do this, since David E. Davis became an
effete, social climbing panderer with psuedo-macho overtones, I've lost
interest in the "high brow" drivel his publication specializes in). Anyhow,
towards the tail end of the mag, there is a section entitiled "On the Block"
written by the self-professed "expert", Keith Martin, editor and publisher of
the auction attendees bible, Sports Car Market magazine (the same idiot who
has been extolling the investment qualities of such paragons of automotive
virtue as the Fiero GT, DeLorean and Karmann Ghia for the last 5 years). In
"On the Block", Martin gives a few examples each month of auction results,
overlayed with his own incredibly insightful and poignant commentary.
The first car written about in this month's article is a 1967 Sunbeam Tiger
Mark 2, SN B382100523, which sold for $31,030. Martin, after reporting a
summary of the auto's state of condition ("Competently restored to a good
touring standard without the usual tacky hot-rod add-ons that Tiger owners
seem to be unable to resist".), then goes on to the conclusion that, "Finding
an ORIGINAL CAR is increasingly difficult" (Doh!!!)
Well, all I have to say is, if this is the same car which those who know are
very certain is an Alger, how are you going to argue with such an
unimpeachable, creditable analyst of the Sunbeam marque as Martin? I mean, he
gets published in a pukka mag like Automobile, and everything...
