What would happen if you took a Gano filter and modified it a bit?
Cut away most of the external cylinder, leaving just the conical
screen and the part of the cylinder that holds it. I'll bet you could
push the resulting assembly into the radiator end of the hose, the
cone sticking out, then push the hose on normally. No blowout
worries, stock appearance, still easy to check.
