The TE/AE newsletter (yes, it does come out once in a while)just had a
Tech Tip about refinishing dashboards. Bill Dewell (Are you out there
Bill?) described coating his stripped dashboard with a polymer that he
poured over it, and then let it cure.
A few years back I heard of someone who refinished a Tiger steering
wheel with what could be this same goop. He described it as that
stuff you buy at craft stores to pour over log sections to make coffee
table tops, etc. All was fine until he went for a drive, with either
bug repellent or sun tan lotion on his hands. The coating began to
dissolve!
Now, a dashboard wouldn't have as much hand traffic as the steering
wheel, but it could get the odd finger print, hand print or whatever,
which could become permanent.
So check the coating material's properties carefully before you use
it.
